Riot Protection for Mounted Units: What Horse Officers Need

Mounted officers occupy a unique tactical position in crowd control operations. Their elevation provides visibility and psychological presence that dismounted officers cannot replicate. Their mobility allows rapid repositioning that changes the dynamics of a crowd situation. And their exposure, seated above a crowd with limited ability to quickly dismount and take cover, creates a specific set of protection challenges that standard riot gear is not designed to address.

The Unique Demands on Mounted Officers

A mounted officer's primary contact points with a crowd are at leg height for the crowd and upper-body height for the officer. Standard riot suits provide good torso and limb coverage for standing officers, but the geometry changes significantly in the saddle. Officers need protection that maintains coverage through the range of mounted motion (posting, sitting, leaning) without restricting the leg movement needed to direct the horse.

Helmet selection for mounted officers also requires additional consideration. The head position and movement range in the saddle differ from those of a standing officer, and some helmet configurations that work well on foot create visibility limitations at mounted eye level.

Officer Protection in the Saddle

Haven Gear's Enforcer suit is the most commonly used configuration for mounted officers because its integrated limb system maintains coverage through the hip and knee flexion range of mounted riding. The modular attachment allows adjustment to avoid binding at the inner thigh, a common point of restriction with suit systems not designed for mounted use.

Glove selection for mounted officers should prioritize grip on reins over maximum impact protection. An officer who cannot feel and control their reins through their gloves has compromised their primary tool for directing the horse. Haven Gear's Hard Knuckle glove provides meaningful impact protection while maintaining enough tactile sensitivity for rein work.

Protecting the Horse

A well-trained police horse is a tactical asset that represents significant investment in selection, training, and veterinary care. Protecting that asset in crowd control operations is both an animal welfare obligation and an operational necessity. Haven Gear's horse riot protection collar is designed specifically for this purpose, protecting the horse's neck and chest, which are the most commonly contacted areas in crowd situations, without restricting the horse's movement or impeding its communication with the rider through rein contact.

The collar system mounts and dismounts quickly, allowing departments to deploy it for high-risk assignments and remove it for lower-risk operations where the additional equipment is unnecessary.

Coordination with Dismounted Units

Mounted and dismounted officers in the same deployment need gear that supports coordinated movement. Mounted officers signal and direct with gestures that must be visible to dismounted teammates; equipment that restricts shoulder and arm movement creates communication problems in the field. Equipment selection for mounted officers should be made with input from the dismounted teams they work alongside.
